Quick Start Guide
Encripta is a file and text encryption application for macOS. In a few steps you can protect your sensitive information.
Step 1: Open the Application
When you open Encripta you will see the main screen with a drag and drop area for files and a section at the bottom for text encryption.
Step 2: Encrypt a File
- Drag a file to the central area of the app
- Or click «Select files» to choose from Finder
- Enter a secure password
- Click «Encrypt»
- A .encripta file will be created in the same folder
Step 3: Decrypt a File
- Drag a .encripta file to the app
- Or double-click the file from Finder (it will open with Encripta)
- Enter the original password
- Click «Decrypt»
- You will see a preview if it’s an image, PDF, or text file
- Click «Save» to recover the original file
Detailed Instructions
Text Encryption
At the bottom of the main screen you will find the text encryption section:
- Select «Encrypt» or «Decrypt» in the selector
- Write or paste the text in the left field
- Enter a password
- Click the lock button
- The result will appear in the right field
- Click the copy icon to copy it to the clipboard
The encrypted text will have the format v2:... and is compatible with Encripta mobile apps.
Password Generator
Access the password generator with Cmd+Shift+G or by clicking the magic wand icon next to the password field. Available options:
- Length: Between 8 and 32 characters
- Lowercase (a-z): Include lowercase letters
- Uppercase (A-Z): Include uppercase letters
- Numbers (0-9): Include digits
- Symbols: Include special characters (!@#$…)
- Exclude ambiguous: Avoid confusing characters (0, O, l, 1, I)
Preview Option
When you decrypt a file, by default a preview is shown before saving. You can disable this option by unchecking «Preview after decrypting» on the decryption screen.

- Images: JPG, PNG, GIF, BMP, TIFF, HEIC, WebP
- Documents: PDF
- Text: TXT, MD, JSON, XML, HTML, CSS, JS, Swift, Python, and more
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
What encryption algorithm does Encripta use?
Encripta uses AES-256-CBC, the most secure encryption standard used by governments and financial institutions worldwide. The key is derived using PBKDF2 with 100,000 iterations for maximum security.
Can I decrypt files on my iPhone or Android?
Yes. The .encripta files and encrypted texts are 100% compatible with Encripta applications for iOS and Android. You can encrypt on Mac and decrypt on mobile, or vice versa.
What happens if I forget the password?
For security reasons, there is no way to recover a forgotten password. AES-256 encryption is virtually impossible to break without the correct password. We recommend using a password manager.
Is the original file deleted after encryption?
No. Encripta creates a new file with .encripta extension next to the original. You decide if you want to delete the original file afterwards.
Is there a file size limit?
There is no fixed limit, but performance may vary with very large files (several GB). For large files, the process may take longer.
Why is the encrypted file larger than the original?
The encrypted file includes metadata (original name, file type, date) and integrity verification data (HMAC). This adds approximately 100-200 bytes to the original size.
Does Encripta send my files to any server?
No. All encryption is performed locally on your Mac. Your files never leave your device. Encripta does not require an Internet connection to work.
Can I open .encripta files directly from Finder?
Yes. Double-click any .encripta file and it will automatically open with Encripta. You can also right-click and select «Open With > Encripta».
